Mega-Church: The Game

While I am prepairing the first post on the Doctrines of Grace, I found a new game for the PC. I just could not resist passing this new game on. Go look at it, and then come back. I’ll wait.

Mega-Church: The Game

What can I say? There is so much of this that is absurd, and yet, so very true in so many churches.

Let me first make a couple of points:

  1. There is nothing wrong with plasma TV’s, sound and light systems
  2. There is nothing wrong with drums, keyboards, guitars, choirs,
  3. There is nothing wrong with a church growing in number (as long as the congregation is growing spiritually as well. You got to get off the milk sometime. The Fillet is amazing!!!)
  4. There are appropriate ways for the church to engage the culture through media such as TV, radio, cable, ect.

However, many evangelical churches use these things to distract from the Gospel. The big theory is that if we dress it up, the Gospel won’t be so offensive, and more people will come to church. If we dress it up enogh, then we can sneak the Gospel in and get them saved. Or, just as bad, lets get a bunch of people saved and moral, but lets just preach at an 8th grade level. I don’t know about you, but I want my kids to get past 8th grade.

While this is one of the funniest things I have seen on in a while, and yes I would buy it in a heartbeat, if it were actually a real game, it is also sad. (I wonder if there are cheat codes. I don’t have a lot of time to play games on my computer, and cheat codes make it easier to get through the whole game. Maybe the code for double offering collection would be “showmethemoney”, and the code to save everyone you meet is “get ’em in”. How about “robertschueller” to be the code for a brand new impressive sanctuary. I’ve got to stop. OK, one more. How about the code for the elder board submitting to your every whim be “seniorpastorsrule”. One more, I promise, this is the last one. The code for 100% of the members tithing could be “cheerfulgivers” or “igivemorethanyoudo”. The code for massive church growth is “rickwarren”. The code for miricle services could be “bennyhinn”. The code for words of knowledge could be “rodparsley”. OK OK OK. I am done.)

There are two large problem here. The first is that the church is becoming a business, not a place where broken sinners can find The Great Physician. The church has become a great place for a Dr. Phil episode. Instead of preaching the Gospel, many churches preach the latest feel good fad.

The second is that worship is being worshipped, not Jesus. For just a minute, or maybe a Sunday, strip away all of the modern trappings. Listen to what you are singing. Is Jesus being exalted unashamedly? Is Jesus being preached? Is your church being seeker sensitive? Who is the seeker? (Little hint, it is not the family down the street, and it’s not the co-worker in the next cubicle. The Seeker is Jesus. Is He pleased with what He is finding?
